Writing for wellbeing

PoetsIN Won’t Turn You Away

1 in 4 adults and 1 in 8 children and young people have a medically diagnosed mental illness. This doesn’t account for those who are struggling in silence. At PoetsIN, we won’t turn anyone away – minds matter – and we appreciate how hard it is to reach out for help.

We have a number of services available to cater for the needs of individuals and organisations, regardless of their location across the globe. It is our aim to help as many people as possible with their mental wellbeing – educating, empowering, understanding, and inspiring everyone to keep their minds healthy.

Below is our current list of services and how you can access them…

Our Services

IN-Person Creative Mental Health Programme™

Our flagship IN-Person Creative Mental Health Programme™ originally began in prisons in 2016 before being rolled out to the public. Through this journey, we tailored and tweaked our programme and we are super proud to be able to state that this programme improves the mental wellbeing of 99% of the individuals who take part by reducing the symptoms of mental ill-health, improving confidence and self-worth, and by giving participants the tools to use in their day-to-day lives to keep their minds healthy.

Our standard IN-Person Creative Mental Health Programme™ runs between six and ten weeks, with a 90 minute session each week. This is supported by homework tasks set online to help solidify the principles and techniques taught in each session.

We cover a plethora of topics within our programme, with each week focusing on a different entity such as – Depression, Anxiety, Worry, Stress, Confidence, Mindfulness, Free Thought, setting boundaries, saying no, and more. During each session we give each member handouts that further explain the techniques and things we have discussed during the session.

We explore happiness and barriers to happiness in one of our modules

Each session has eight to ten participants and is led by a PoetsIN trained and DBS checked Project Worker. Each Project Worker will guide you through each session which is made up by solo work, pair work, group work, and group discussion.

At the start and end of each programme, participants are asked to complete a Mental Wellbeing Assessment which allows us to measure our impact and ensure we continue to be effective with our programme.

The IN-Person Programme is available via third-party organisations or are organised by the PoetsIN team within one of our locations. Our programme is suitable for everyone, including those who want to better their mental wellbeing, but who don’t have a mental illness.

Online Creative Mental Health Programme™

Our Online Creative Mental Health Programme™ is the online version of our IN-Person Creative Mental Health Programme™. It is proven to give the same results but caters for those who aren’t able to attend an IN-Person programme due to severe anxiety, physical health difficulties, or location constraints.

Instead of meeting once a week IN-Person, ten participants are given access to our online classroom where there is a mix of text-based discussion and work that the participant works through throughout the week. The programme is lead by a PoetsIN trained and DBS checked Project Worker. The Project Worker will guide you through each week and will leave supportive feedback on your work.

We cover a plethora of topics within our programme, with each week focusing on a different entity such as – Depression, Anxiety, Worry, Stress, Confidence, Mindfulness, Free Thought, setting boundaries, saying no, and more. PoetsIN PostBox™

During our IN-Person Creative Mental Health Programme™ we use a technique we created called Free Thought Writing™. We won’t go into detail here about why it works, but we have many a service user that knows it does. To cut a long explanation short, we’ll tell you that Free Thought Writing™ is a brain dump of sorts. It is proven with our research, trials, and ongoing use of this technique that spending 5 minutes purging (freeing) your thoughts can help dramatically reduce the intensity of an emotion. Cue, PoetsIN Postbox™.

During our in-person sessions we encourage members to destroy what they just wrote and throw it away – or, if they’re at home – burn it, safely. It’s a visual representation of you saying goodbye to the pain, anger, intense emotion you were just feeling. We decided that by having the PoetsIN Postbox, it is another way of waving goodbye to those unhelpful thoughts – in a controlled and safe way.

So, how does it work?

Write your rant, write until you feel empty. It doesn’t need to make sense. It doesn’t need to be grammatically correct. This is about getting the inside, out. Then email it to freethought@poetsin.com – that is the equivalent of you burning your thoughts. Our support team will monitor this inbox. We will not reply to you if you do not request it. However, if you want someone to reply, please make it known and one of the team will respond to you.
